“I could sit there all day and do nothing but watch them grow,” he says in the January issue of Britain’s Psychologies magazine. “I’m totally inspired by them.”

Depp, 45, has two children – Lily-Rose, 9, and Jack, 6 – with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. He says meeting Paradis gave him “proper perspective and understanding” in his life.

“It wasn’t until then that things started to get real for me,” he tells the magazine. “We just have a miraculous understanding of each other.”

The Golden Globe-winning actor also looked back at his more memorable roles.

“I was a million percent in love with Edward Scissorhands,” Depp says of his 1990 film persona. “I remember looking in the mirror on the last day of shooting … and thinking how sad I was to be saying goodbye to Edward.”

The first Pirates of the Carribean was also a blast for the star.

The Pirates of The Caribbean star—who was once engaged to party-loving British supermodel Kate Moss—says he used to party hard to cope with super-stardom.

He said, “I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. I felt I could only be myself when I was alone, that I turned into some kind of novelty. The only way I could get through that time was to drink.

“I poisoned myself with alcohol for years but I’ve never been into drugs in the way it was sometimes made out.”

And Depp—who has starred in a string of critically-acclaimed film performances and received three Academy Award nominations—admits he is still insecure about his acting abilities.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star asked a high-end California jewellery store to close to the public so he could privately choose a ring for Vanessa, who he has been dating for 10 years.

A source told America’s OK! magazine: “This was Johnny’s third or fourth visit to the store.

“He looked at an assortment of classic solitaire diamond rings in platinum settings—a really beautiful selection of elegant and understated rings and made a very large purchase.”

Johnny—who has two children, Lily Rose, nine and Jack, six, with Vanessa—has previously insisted he and the French star have no desire to marry.

The 45-year-old actor once claimed: “I don’t feel like I need a piece of paper that says I own her and she owns me.”

He would not be the first tousled British star to appear alongside Johnny Depp in the film series; Rolling Stone Keith Richards had a brief cameo as Jack Sparrow’s father in Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

A source quoted in The Sun said the part was “perfectly suited” to Brand, who is known for his eccentric style.

“There’s a lot of Jack Sparrow in his mannerisms and behaviour. Depp’s accent isn’t a million miles away from Russell’s either,” the source said.

“Russell joining the Sparrows alongside Johnny and Keith Richards as their dad will complete the ultimate on-screen pirate family.”

Despite his problems in Britain, Brand has a growing profile in Hollywood.

Since making his US film debut earlier this year in romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he has worked on a Disney film, Bedtime Stories, due for release at Christmas, and has a role alongside Dame Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons in a big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Tabloid reports last week speculated that Efron would be groomed to eventually take over from Johnny Depp in the Disney franchise.

It was said that the “High School Musical” star would pick up a $10 million paycheck for the starring role.

However, Efron told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning: “Honestly, at this time it’s just a rumor.”

Along with the reprisal of off-beat pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp will star as the long-suffering Native American sidekick Tonto in a new version of the iconic “Lone Ranger,” produced by hit producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

If this wasn’t enough for the 45-year-old actor, Depp will also play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton’s adaptation of the classic “Alice in Wonderland,” using a mix of 3D animation and performance capture technology similar to that used for 2007’s “Beowulf.”

The announcements for “Ranger,” “Wonderland” and “an additional role” were made before a crowd of roaring fans in Hollywood Wednesday when Depp appeared at the Walt Disney Showcase, a preview of the studio’s productions over the next few years.

The “Pirates 4″ confirmation arrived early Thursday through the actor’s representatives in Variety.

Im not sure if youve heard or not but entertainment weekly confirmed that for Tim Burton’s upcoming 2010 film Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp will be playing Mad Hatter. It hasn’t been said yet whether or not that the film will be animated or not.

A anonymous source said: “Burton has had designs on ‘Alice In Wonderland’ since before he was famous. He has a knack for turning what seem like stories for just kids into gripping, spooky fables loved just as much by adults. He’s held out on doing ‘Alice’ till he got a big enough budget. Now this film is financed by Disney so money won’t be a problem.”

Also actress Mia Wasikowska will be playing the part of Alice.

Studio bosses have reportedly set their sights on the Hollywood heart-throb to star as The Riddler, a role last played by funnyman Jim Carey in 1995’s Batman Forever.

“Johnny’s a pro,” a source said of the versatile actor. “He’ll be able to take the role and still make the character his own.”

After The Dark Knight – starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger—took a record $314 million in ten days, it is thought producers are keen to start casting for the next flick.

Actors linked to the film include beauty Angelina Jolie in the role of Catwoman and Oscar-winning actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin, a role previously portrayed by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns in 1992.
